The WinTV-HVR-950Q is a simple-to-use device that brings over-the-air high definition ATSC digital TV as well as analog cable TV directly to your PC desktop or laptop. With the additional included antenna, it can also receive analog TV broadcasts, and it can also accept video feeds directly from a camera or satellite box.

More versatile than a DVR, the WinTV-HVR-950Q is a pocket-sized device that simply plugs into your PC's USB port. It features a built-in digital ATSC over-the-air TV receiver. If you live in one of the more than 200 cities in the United States that receives ATSC digital TV, you'll have immediate access to as many as 1500 digital TV stations. ATSC digital TV is the over-the-air HDTV standard for North America. ATSC broadcasts range in resolution from standard definition up to the high definition 1080i format. A portable digital TV antenna, which can be used to receive digital TV up to 10 miles from an ATSC transmitter, is included with the PVR . Watch Clear QAM Digital TV
The WinTV-HVR-950Q also has a built-in QAM tuner, allowing you to watch and record QAM programming. Clear QAM digital TV channels are digital cable channels which can be watched on a TV set without a cable TV set top box. are Many cable operators transmit the local high definition ATSC channels using clear QAM.. Some cable operators transmit additional non-premium TV programs using clear QAM. With the WinTV-HVR-950Q, you can watch these channels for free. Clear QAM channels range from standard definition to the highest 1080i definition.

Once the WinTV-HVR-950Q is connected, you can begin to record your favorite shows in high-quality MPEG-2 directly to your hard disk using the Hauppauge SoftPVR MPEG-2 encoder. Television recordings will typically consume 5 GB of disk space per hour for ATSC high definition, while analog recordings will typically consume 1.5 GB of disk space per hour. PVR stands for PC Video Recorder. The WinTV-HVR-950 is a PVR that allows you to play television through your computer and record the broadcasts digitally. PVR doesn't use standard videocassettes; instead, it uses your computer's hard disk to store the broadcasts.

This is a great tuner/ video recorder. It is fully compatible with Vista and Windows Media Center. The remote control is convenience and works great with Windows Media Center. It virtually transforms your desktop/laptop into a HDTV plus a digital recorder system. Powerful hardware configuration (CPU, memory and hard disk) is strongly recommended. Recording 1 hour of HD contents (720p/1080i) in Windows Media Center requires 6 GB of hard disk space. The software package is good but I prefer Windows Media Center.

Before I bought this item I read some reviews that it is changing channels very slow, crashes a lot after watching the hd channels, some ppl couldn't even get hd channels somehow.

The product turned out pretty awesome! I did notice some slowness when i first connected it to my pc (vista-32, q6600, 8800gt, 4gb ram) through a pci usb hub. I was wondering why since i definitely have the horse power for the device to be running pretty fast. I hooked it up to one of the standard usb ports and it got a lot faster. Actually now it is perfect. I am able to watch atsc channels no problems whatsoever.

I also tried it on my aspire one and it worked perfectly there as well!

Received the item in less than 48 hours with Amazon Prime shipping, plugged it in and started up Windows Media Center and walked through the wizard and off it went. I know get 99 channels.

I am running Windows Vista Home Ultimate- I plugged our coax cable into the tuner plugged tuner into the fron USB 2.0 port.

That was really all there was to it except for the wizard. I did not even mess with Wintv. I suspect there are other channels or use of the antenna that others have tried but I was thrilled with just being able to watch television on my new 22 " monitor. I had been watching a tiny old television that was perched to one corner of my office. I work from home and it's great to be able to catch up on news etc in the corner of my screen. One of those luxuries that you absolutely do not need.. but wonder how you got along without!

Summary: Buy it, best one out there and a bargain!

I bought the 950Q because it came with a remote, qualified for Amazon Prime and was bundled with an antenna all for under $100 dollars. It did not say it was supported on the Mac, and I took a gamble...it paid off.

It works great with the latest version of EyeTV(3.0.3) on the Mac(10.5.4 and 10.5.3 tested), even the remote is supported through the receiver on the device itself.

Don't even bother with the WinTV software. A terrible interface and sluggish response makes it a chore to turn into even a quick news broadcast.

It works OK with Vista Ultimate Media Center, but it does not have the same guide/channel source as EyeTV so I have only got the analog cable channels to work or the OTA HD broadcasts to work, but not the unencrypted HD channels on the digital cable connection.

Oh yes, the included "antenna"...it might work if you are outside but barely picks up 1/3 of the channels inside. If I take the thing on my next trip I would imagine in would pick up channels in the hotel room in the center of a city...if you were facing the transmitting antennas. But who cares...it is kind of cute.

first off, this turned out to be great product. my initial thinking was that it would be for both my laptop and home based pc. my home pc (Gateway GT5622) did and still does have some issues when looking at higher-res HD channels via the 950Q. an enormous amount of memory is taken up (up to 250Mb) and the CPU gets challenged a bit (45-60%). all the while my HD channels remain choppy. for me in my area, Verizon FIOS offers two flavors of digital programming per broadcasting network (i.e. ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, even PBS) and for the most part you can tell by aspect ratio what you're getting. so when the HD version gets too choppy, i just tune to the less taxing and lower resolution digital channel and it's fine though not as clear. so why the 5 stars???...on my laptop (Dell Vostro 1700, 17" monitor) which ostensibly has less horsepower than my desktop, the digital channels are like a true HDTV flatscreen television, I AM SERIOUS!!! and if i could have given this little thumbdrive-looking tuner a 6, i would have.
I don't know why the desktop (Windows Vista, Intel Dual CPU E 2160, 1.5G RAM) has so much trouble and the laptop (Windows XP, 2.0GHz CPU) does not, perhaps the GeForce card in the laptop is helping...I dunno. But a 4 for the desktop and a 6 for the laptop gives you a 5!!!!
